However, after the upgrade Firefox didn't load any of the extensions I have installed

Fortunately I found this thread in the support forum. Simply delete extensions.ini, extensions.cache, and extensions.rdf from your profile folder. On its next start Firefox will scan for installed extansions and regenerate these files.

I hope this post will be indexed properly so you can find this information faster than me.

Virtual PC 2007 released

Earlier today Microsoft released Virtual PC 2007. Generally this wouldn't be worthwhile to be mentioned on my blog. However, I'll write this nevertheless because whenever I install Virtual PC, I want to customize the path where the files for the virtual machines are stored, and each time I have look up the information how to accomplish that.

By default, Virtual PC's setup creates a My Virtual Machines folder in My Documents. Though the primary HDD of my machine is a 10.000 RMP beast, I have two additional 10.000s combined to a RAID0, and that's a perfect host for my virtual machines.

Luckily, you are able to customize where Virtual PC stores that files. You only have to specify your desired path in an environment variable named myvirtualmachines.

Though it's even documented in a knowledge base article, I know my blog better than the knowledge base so I post it here

Remote Access to SQL Server Express

Today I tried to access a SQL Express server remotely for the first time. Because I'm writing this you may already guess that I had some trouble. In fact, I got several different error messages while playing around with configuration of the SQL server, e.g. SQL server does not allow remote connections, Server does not exist or access denied etc. After struggling with the SQL Server Configuration Manager and SQL Server Surface Area Configuration for about an hour, I finally consulted Google and found this article: Configuring SQL Server Express 2005 for Remote Access when SQL Server does not allow remote connections. It provides detailed step-by-step instructions, which finally helped me to solve my problem.

Windows Live Messenger FAQ

Thanks to Rich Mercer for inviting me to the Windows Messenger Live Beta program.
Event though Visual Studio 2003 has been released almost two years ago, there are still some features I haven't seen before.

Today, Tim Schwallie has posted an article at CodeProject, how to set up exception handling in Visual Studio.

Just type Ctrl+Alt+E...

Broken Start Menu

Every now and then my start menu is broken. I.e. the left area
normally showing last used applications is black, and sub menus for
items such as "All Programs", "Administrative Tools" do not open.

Google led me to this forum thread, where they blame the Logitech Webcam Software, so I've uninstalled this. I hope this will help...
